在英式英语里chips是薯条，crisps是薯片。美式英语里则是French fries是薯条，而potato chips是薯片。
与美国人不同，英国人说“炸马铃薯”时会表达为“chips”，chips侧重于指条状的马铃薯，因此英国人说chips时，一般表达的意思是“炸薯条”。
